Say “Hello” to James Curran, Our Newest Teammate

There’s nothing quite like the start of a new year to have you thinking toward the future.

How will you grow? What will you accomplish? How will you get there?

We’re thinking about all of those things at Presence, too. We closed out 2018 with our company-wide Camp Presence, our annual retreat where we get out of the office to learn, talk strategy, and bond with our teammates. Afterward, growth was something that was on everyone’s minds.

So it’s only natural that right at the beginning of 2019 we’re welcoming a new person to #TeamPresence, James Curran!

Welcoming James Curran, our newest senior full-stack engineer

James is our newest addition to our product development team, which means he’ll be helping to build the pretty cool software that over 100 campuses around the world use to engage their students. We’re thrilled to have him on board, so let’s get to know James with a little Q&A.

Q: What lead you to Presence?

As a St. Pete native, I’ve always wanted to work downtown, so location was a big factor. Another was the positivity that radiates from each team member. The all-cloud infrastructure and modern back-end tech stack were nice as well. Most important, though, was the mission. I view knowledge as the antidote to small-mindedness and tribalism that still plagues our species. Improving academic success reduces ignorance for future generations.

Q: How do you see this position fitting into your future career? What benefits or experiences do you hope to gain from working at Presence?

Presence is an opportunity for me to jump in with both feet to the latest and fastest web frameworks. Mastery in this area will ensure success for any future endeavors.

Q: Where did you attend school? What was your major(s)? Were you involved with any co-curricular or extracurricular activities?

I began at USF after high school as a music major but switched to undecided/undeclared just after orientation. Lacking direction, I took some time away from school before settling on web development. I transferred to St. Petersburg College and acquired a relevant A.S. degree. Unfortunately, I wasn’t involved in many co-curricular activities. I really could have used Presence to get more involved!

Q: Why are you excited to be a part of the Presence team?

From the outside, this place just seems to have a buzz about it — lots of momentum. New clients are featured on the social media pages, seemingly on a weekly basis. Presence pops up in the St. Pete tech scene news all the time, too. I’m grateful for the opportunity to help!

Q: What do you like to do outside of work?

When not at work I’m usually playing Lego Star Wars or Roblox with my six-year-old daughter or helping my wife with her business. Our little family also likes to travel. We fell in love with Ireland in 2017 and Paris in 2018. I like to make experimental ambient music when I have a few extra minutes.

Nothing brings the family closer together than a love of bread.

Q: What is something you’ve always wanted to try? What are some goals you have in the future you’d like to accomplish? Why?

The field of data science and machine learning interests me. I love the idea of taking data, cleaning it, creating and training a model, then incorporating it into the real world to improve lives. Analysis and creation of meaningful, actionable information from data is great too, so I’m hoping to dig into the analytics features of Presence.

We’re thrilled to have you starting 2019 with us, James!

And if you’re looking to start a new adventure in the new year, check out our open roles — we’re hiring in every department.
